In build-up to the International Day of Yoga 2025, the AYUSH Division of Soreng Primary Health Centre (PHC), under the National AYUSH Mission and the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, organised a yoga session titled “Yoga Samavesh” at the Rurban Complex in Soreng on Wednesday.
The event aimed to encourage preventive healthcare practices and spread awareness about holistic wellbeing, particularly the role of yoga in managing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). A key focus of the session was on yoga as a powerful tool to prevent lifestyle-related disorders, which are increasingly affecting people across age groups.
The program began with a health talk by Dr. Roshma Thapa, Medical Officer (AYUSH), who educated attendees about Non-Communicable Diseases and the importance of early screening. She informed the audience about the availability of a dedicated NCD screening centre at the venue, where participants could undergo health checks. Dr. Thapa emphasized that regular yoga practice can help reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and manage chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.
One of the main highlights was the live yoga demonstration led by certified yoga instructor Mrs. Darshika Sharma. She guided participants through a thoughtful sequence of asanas and pranayama techniques, ensuring everyone could follow along regardless of experience level. Her clear instructions and energetic presence helped make the session engaging and accessible.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from local residents, officials, and health workers. Among the dignitaries present were Sub-Divisional Magistrate (HQ) Mr. Prem K Subba, Senior Welfare Officer Mrs. Prativa Tamang, Deputy Director (Sports & Youth Affairs) Mrs. Mamita Gurung, and staff from various government departments. Their presence added to the motivational atmosphere and underscored the government’s commitment to health and wellness at the grassroots level.
