As part of the Sub-Divisional Level celebrations for the 79th Independence Day, Yangang witnessed the opening of a spirited two-day chess tournament on Tuesday at PM SHRI Yangang Senior Secondary School. The event, designed for both students and open-category players, brought together close to a hundred participants from schools and the local community.
The tournament was inaugurated in a ceremonial gathering attended by Hon’ble Minister for Roads and Bridges Shri N.B. Dahal and Hon’ble Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Smt. Raj Kumari Thapa. They were joined by several dignitaries, community leaders, and organising committee members. The competition is being held under the guidance of the Deputy Speaker, reflecting a strong commitment to promoting both sports and intellectual pursuits in the region.
In line with the state’s “Nasha Mukt Sikkim” campaign, the event aims to promote mental discipline alongside physical health. While sports such as football and athletics often dominate public attention, organisers stressed that chess plays a vital role in sharpening focus, improving strategic thinking, and enhancing decision-making skills among youth. The enthusiastic participation and competitive spirit on display underscored the growing interest in mind sports within the community.
The tournament is supported by the Yangang Tourism Development Committee (YTDC), Yangang Taxi Drivers’ Cooperative Society Ltd., Yangang Lingee Lingmoo Taxi Driver Welfare Association, and contributions from Sikkim Chess Association President Mr. Leela Shastri. Event coordination is led by Mr. Hem Rizal with active assistance from local volunteers.
