As the state of Sikkim marks 50 years of its integration with the Indian Union this year, a glaring omission in a national newspaper has stirred deep concern and disappointment among its citizens. On May 13, The Hindu, one of India’s most respected and widely circulated English dailies, published a map of India without showing Sikkim.

The article in question, titled "With a new Pope, an understanding of Catholicism in India", was written by journalist Mohd Arshid. It appeared in the newspaper’s national edition and featured several data visuals, including charts and maps related to the Christian population in India. However, readers quickly noticed that in Map 3 meant to display the share of Catholics within the Christian community across Indian states, Sikkim was completely missing.

This mistake has not gone unnoticed. Many readers, both from Sikkim and across the country, expressed shock and dismay on social media platforms and news forums. The timing of the error has added to the discontent, as 2025 marks a historic occasion for Sikkim; 50 years since it became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975, following a decisive referendum.
