Noted photojournalist and visual storyteller Wang Chen Lama was awarded the prestigious Lagansheel Yuwa Patrakar Puraskar 2025 by the Press Club of Sikkim during its 23rd Foundation Day celebrations held at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok on Thursday.

Wang Chen Lama, known for his striking images and powerful visual narratives, has built a name for himself through years of sincere effort and unwavering dedication to the field of photography. Though he started his career in a well-paying corporate job in Bangalore, Wang Chen made the bold and difficult decision to leave that behind to follow his passion for photography. This leap of faith has since become a turning point in his life, shaping him into one of the region’s most respected visual journalists.

Despite having no formal training in photography, Wang Chen pursued the craft with heart and determination. His photographs are known for their raw honesty, emotional depth, and artistic clarity. Whether it is the quiet beauty of daily life or the chaos of natural disasters, his lens has managed to capture moments that speak louder than words.

One of the most notable examples of his work was his coverage of the devastating Sikkim floods, which drew attention from across the world. His gripping images were carried by major international outlets such as Reuters, BBC, Japan Times, and CNN, bringing global focus to the local tragedy. His work did not just highlight the destruction but also the resilience and spirit of the people of Sikkim.

Beyond journalism, Wang Chen has also made his mark in the field of public art. Two of his most recognised art installations—the Heart Monument at Wellness Park and the Moon Sculpture at Ridge Park in Gangtok—have added a unique creative flair to the cityscape. These installations reflect his interest in blending art with community engagement, further proving his versatile talent.

Speaking at the event, members of the Press Club of Sikkim lauded Wang Chen's passion, humility, and commitment to truthful storytelling. They noted that he has not only elevated the standards of photojournalism in the region but has also inspired many young journalists to follow their creative dreams with courage.
