Volunteers trained for search and rescue in high-risk areas of Sikkim

A specialized search and rescue training programme for volunteers was conducted at JN Road, Kyongnosla, under the Sikkim Inspires Project. Organized by the Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco Tourism (IHCAE), Chemchey, under the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, the training aimed to equip local volunteers with essential emergency response skills.
The event saw the presence of Kazi Sherpa, Principal of IHCAE and Joint Director, Adventure, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, along with Deputy Director Manoj Kumar Chettri and Assistant Director Pempa D. Bhutia. The training included 21 trainees from JN Road and a biker group from Mangan, who received hands-on instruction on search and rescue techniques.
The programme focused on locating and assisting individuals in distress, with volunteers learning to use various tools and methods to improve their efficiency in emergency situations. The training also incorporated practical exercises simulating real-life scenarios, ensuring that participants could apply their skills effectively in a controlled environment.
Speaking at the event, Kazi Sherpa emphasized that the initiative is designed to prepare local volunteers as first responders in accident-prone areas. The theoretical sessions were held at IHCAE, Chemchey, while the field training took place at an altitude exceeding 10,000 feet. He highlighted that certified volunteers will be officially recognized as a Government-backed rescue team, equipped with the necessary tools and gear. Additionally, he announced a ₹15 lakh insurance package, which includes 10% medical insurance benefits, ensuring financial security for volunteers.
Deputy Director Manoj Kumar Chettri stated that further training sessions will be conducted as needed, with the next phase scheduled for Yuksam. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness and community resilience through such initiatives.
