Universities and colleges to remain closed on May 29 as PM Modi to attend Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee celebration
To ensure smooth arrangements and security during the event, the Directorate of Higher Education, under the Education Department of Sikkim, issued a circular on May 28.

The Government of Sikkim has announced that several private and government universities and colleges in and around Gangtok will remain closed on May 29, 2025. This decision comes as the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has graciously agreed to attend the Golden Jubilee celebration of Sikkim’s Statehood as the Chief Guest.
The celebration will take place at Paljor Stadium, marking 50 years since Sikkim became a full-fledged state of India. This is a momentous occasion for the people of Sikkim, who have waited half a century to commemorate their state’s journey and achievements.
To ensure smooth arrangements and security during the event, the Directorate of Higher Education, under the Education Department of Sikkim, issued a circular on May 28. The circular listed the educational institutions that will be closed for the day. These include:
Khanchendzonga State University, Tadong
Sikkim Central University, Samdur, 6th Mile
Sikkim Manipal University, Tadong
Sikkim Professional University, Metro Point, Tadong
SRM University, 6th Mile, Tadong
Harka Maya College of Education, 6th Mile, Tadong
Damber Singh Degree College, 6th Mile, Tadong
ICFAI University, Sichey
National Institute of Technology (NIT), Chorten, Deorali
Namgyal Institute of Tibetology’s affiliated colleges (NBBGC), Tadong
Sikkim Government College, Burtuk
Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk
The closure is intended to allow students, teachers, and staff to participate in or witness the grand celebration of this historic event. It is also expected to help the administration maintain security and manage the large gathering that will come to Paljor Stadium to see the Prime Minister and join in the festivities.
