Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju lauded Sikkim’s development model and praised Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for his leadership while speaking at the India Today Conclave. Rijiju highlighted Sikkim’s progress and urged other northeastern states, particularly hilly regions, to learn from its success.

The minister drew comparisons between Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, stating that Arunachal's growth trajectory could match Sikkim’s progress within the next 7-8 years. “I have told people in Arunachal that if the state continues on its current path, its per capita income will see a significant rise. If Arunachal harnesses its full potential, its per capita income could reach levels comparable to some Gulf countries,” Rijiju said.

Emphasizing sustainable development, Rijiju underlined that economic growth should not come at the cost of environmental degradation. “Not at the cost of exploiting the hills just for economic prosperity. That is why I appreciate the Sikkim model,” he added.

The minister praised Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, describing him as a kind-hearted and progressive leader. He also mentioned their long-standing friendship and mutual cooperation. Rijiju encouraged other northeastern states to adopt best practices from Sikkim while also exchanging ideas with each other for collective growth.

Sikkim’s development initiatives, particularly in sustainable tourism, organic farming, and infrastructure, have been widely recognized. The state has set an example in balancing economic progress with environmental conservation, making it a model for other hilly states in India.
