In an effort to promote dignified livelihoods and foster transparent local governance, a significant meeting was held on May 2 with the porters of Singtam at the Community Hall of Singtam Nagar Panchayat. The gathering, chaired by the Hon’ble Municipal President, saw participation from Councillors, the SHO of Singtam Police Station, the MEO of Singtam Nagar Panchayat, and the Bazaar Inspector, all of whom engaged in discussions aimed at improving the working conditions of the porters in the area.
During the meeting, three crucial decisions were announced that aim to bring more structure, respect, and fairness to the lives of these hardworking individuals. One of the key decisions involves the introduction of uniforms for porters, complete with visible token numbers. This initiative is designed not only to create order but also to give the often-overlooked workforce a sense of recognition and dignity. The porters will now be easily identifiable, ensuring they are seen as an integral part of the community.
Another important step forward is the licensing of all porters. Under the new plan, only licensed porters will be permitted to work, and they will be required to carry their licenses at all times. This move will eliminate confusion and prevent exploitation, giving both the workers and the public a clear understanding of who is authorized to provide porter services.
Lastly, the meeting focused on establishing standardized service rates for the porters. The days of unpredictable pricing are now over. The rates for porter services will be fixed and monitored by the Singtam Nagar Panchayat and Singtam Police, ensuring transparency and fairness. This decision is a vital step toward ensuring that the porters are compensated fairly for their work while providing the public with a clear and accountable pricing structure.
