“We have given enough chances to local parties. What have they done? The roads are still bad, youths are still unemployed, and villages are still neglected. It's time for change,” said Basnett.

Two well-known social workers and public advocates from South Sikkim—Sundar Basnett of Temi Namphing and Man Bahadur Karki of Yangang—formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on July 16. Their decision marks a growing trend of local leaders aligning with the national party, inspired by the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s rising profile in the state.

The joining ceremony was held in the presence of BJP Sikkim State President D.R. Thapa, along with senior party leaders. Welcoming the new members, Thapa said, “Their joining will bring more strength to our efforts in reaching out to the people of Sikkim, especially the youth. We welcome them with open arms.”

Both Basnett and Karki have long been involved in community service and grassroots activism. In their statements, they expressed deep disappointment with the performance of regional parties in the state, stating that despite holding power for nearly five decades, these parties failed to bring lasting and visible development.

“We have given enough chances to local parties. What have they done? The roads are still bad, youths are still unemployed, and villages are still neglected. It's time for change,” said Basnett.

Man Bahadur Karki echoed similar views, saying, “We need a party that talks less and works more. BJP has a vision for the nation, and under Modi ji’s leadership, we believe Sikkim can also grow faster.”

State BJP President D.R. Thapa urged the new members to bring new energy and ideas into the party, especially in encouraging youth participation and grassroots work. He emphasized that the BJP is committed to serving all sections of society and wants to build a strong network across all constituencies in the state.
