Two arrested with huge cache of drugs in Soreng; Police step up crackdown on drug peddling

The Nayabazar Police under Soreng District made a significant seizure on the night of June 1. The police intercepted a two-wheeler and arrested two men who were allegedly carrying a large amount of banned drugs. The arrest took place at around 9:00 PM at Mangal turning on the Nayabazar-Legship highway.

The two accused have been identified as Sonam Tashi Tamang, 31, a resident of Rohtak, Pipaley, and Mani Tamang, 27, from Bhasmey. During a search, police recovered 1,712 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon and 21 bottles of Annirex cough syrup from their possession. Both the contraband substances and the scooty used by the accused were seized on the spot.

Police said that a case has been registered under the Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act, and further investigation is underway. According to officials, Sonam Tashi Tamang and another individual named Mangal Rai had been under police surveillance for a long time due to their suspected involvement in drug-related activities. Tamang was arrested during this operation, and authorities are continuing efforts to nab others involved.

Superintendent of Police Nahkul Pradhan (SPS) said that the Soreng District Police is fully committed to eradicating the menace of drugs from the region. “We want to make Soreng a Nasha Mukta (drug-free) district. We request all citizens to work together with the police in fighting against drug abuse,” said SP Pradhan.
