The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced the appointment of senior diplomat Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa as India’s next Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The announcement was made on Saturday through an official statement.
Sherpa, who belongs to the 2002 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the MEA. He will soon move to Hanoi to take charge as the head of the Indian mission in Vietnam. The ministry said, “Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa (IFS:2002), presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.”
Sherpa is an alumnus of Goethals School in Kurseong, Darjeeling, and has built a long and respected career in diplomacy. Over the years, he has worked in several important divisions of the MEA. He earlier served as Joint Secretary in the United Nations (Politics) Division, where he was engaged in key issues related to India’s role in the UN.
India and Vietnam share strong ties in trade, culture, and strategic affairs, and the appointment of Sherpa comes at a time when both countries are deepening their cooperation in defense, technology, and regional security. The role of Ambassador to Vietnam is considered important, especially as Hanoi has become a close partner of India in Southeast Asia under New Delhi’s “Act East Policy.”
