As Sikkim marked the 50th anniversary of its statehood on May 16, Tseten Tashi Bhutia, Tribal Minister of Sikkim, Convenor of SIBLAC (Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee), and Chief Advisor to BJP Sikkim State, shared a message with the people of the state.
In a statement released on the occasion, Bhutia greeted the people of Sikkim and extended his wishes on the golden jubilee of the state joining the Indian Union. He called this day a historic moment and said it was a time to feel proud of Sikkim’s journey as a part of Bharat over the past 50 years.
"Namaste Sikkim. Greetings on the 50th Statehood Day of Sikkim," he began, adding that this day is not just about celebration but also about reflection. Bhutia thanked the leadership of the nation and all individuals who have played a role in bringing peace and progress to Sikkim over the decades.
But Bhutia did not stop at praise. He used the occasion to remind people of their responsibility as citizens. He said that while it is important to celebrate, it is equally important to stay aware of the issues that threaten the future of Sikkim and its people.
"Our collective responsibility must go beyond celebration," he said. "We must be vigilant and vocal when faced with injustice, especially when the future of our generations and the national security of our country are at stake."
He pointed out that remaining silent in the face of wrongdoings can only benefit those who wish to weaken the identity, culture, and sovereignty of Sikkim. In this context, Bhutia recalled the demand made by SIBLAC on January 17 this year for a White Paper on the critical issues affecting Sikkim.
He said that transparency and accountability are not just slogans but are necessary tools to protect Sikkim's special constitutional status under Article 371F. This Article provides Sikkim with certain protections that are not given to other states, especially in terms of land, law, and the rights of indigenous people.
Bhutia emphasized that protecting the indigenous communities and their rights is very important. He said the demographic and cultural balance of Sikkim is delicate and needs to be preserved with care and honesty.
The Tribal Minister also urged the youth of Sikkim to take responsibility for the future. "I urge every citizen of Sikkim, especially the youth, to be aware, informed, and fearless in raising your voice when your land, your people, and your future are threatened," he said.
His message ended on a hopeful note. He prayed for peace and righteousness in the state and the country and expressed faith in the vision of a developed India by 2047.
“May God bless Sikkim and India. Jai Hind. Jai Vikshit Bharat @ 2047,” he said.
