In a bid to improve sanitation facilities for tourists in Sikkim, a major initiative has been launched under the guidance of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay. Responding to repeated concerns from visitors over the lack of washrooms on key routes, Area MLA-cum-Advisor Shri Thenlay Tshering Bhutia has taken proactive steps to address the issue, particularly along the busy JN Road under Kyonognosla GPU in the 29-Kabi Lungchok Constituency.
To identify the best spots for building public washrooms and restrooms, a detailed field survey was recently conducted. The main focus was on the Changu and Nathula route, which receives a high volume of tourist traffic throughout the year. Visitors have long voiced their dissatisfaction over inadequate sanitation options on this popular journey, prompting the government to act swiftly.
The survey was carried out with the involvement of key officials and local stakeholders. Among those who participated were the BDO and AD of Kabi BAC, Range Officer and Beat Officers, field staff from the Kyonognosla Forest Range, Junior Engineers from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, and members of the local Panchayats. Zilla Panchayat representatives, the Panchayat President, Ward Panchayat Members, women’s group Nari Shakti, and several local youths also played an active role in the exercise.
Thenlay Tshering Bhutia has directed all departments concerned to prepare detailed cost estimates and project proposals as soon as possible. These proposals will then be forwarded to the Chief Minister’s Office for review and necessary approval. Once sanctioned, the construction of new restrooms will begin along designated tourist corridors.
