In a tribute to Sikkim’s 50 years of statehood, the Commerce and Industries Department, in collaboration with the Transport Department, has kicked off a special series of exposure tours to enrich the experiences of diverse sections of the society. The initiative, which covers students, senior citizens, MSME entrepreneurs, and local representatives, began its journey with a memorable day-long tour for 25 students from Padma Odzer Choeling Secondary School, popularly known as Ms. Keepu’s school, located in Chongay.
The exposure visit, flagged off from Gangtok, was more than just a sightseeing trip. It was a thoughtfully planned educational experience that aimed to blend culture, recreation, and industry for the young learners. Director of MSME, Mr. Ravi Kumar, IFS, officially inaugurated the tour in the presence of Joint Secretary MSME Mr. Topden Zangpo, General Managers of DIC Gangtok and Pakyong—Mr. Prakash Rai and Mr. Jigmi Wangdi—alongside staff from the Transport Department, and school representatives.
The students’ first stop was at Vajra World Mall, one of Gangtok’s favorite entertainment destinations. The children, many of whom had never visited a mall before, delighted in games and recreational activities. The mall’s General Manager, Mrs. Manisha Chettri, along with Property Manager Mr. Anil Tamang and their team, extended warm hospitality, ensuring the students felt welcome and comfortable throughout the visit. Refreshments were also provided, adding to the cheerful atmosphere.
Next, the group headed to the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom (DHH), a heritage institution that showcases Sikkim’s rich tradition of handwoven and handcrafted goods. Guided by Mr. Sangay Tenzing, the students explored various sections where live art, weaving, and carving classes were taking place. The visit offered a rare glimpse into the world of traditional craftsmanship and underlined the importance of preserving local arts and culture.
The highlight of the tour, however, was the visit to the luxurious MAYFAIR Hotel. Welcomed by Assistant Vice President (Operations) Mr. Chandan Thakur and his team, which included Executive Chef Mr. Niranjan Nayak, AGM Mr. Zishan Ali, and Front Office Manager Mr. Bhakti Prasada Nanda, the students were given a warm and memorable experience. From fun-filled recreational sessions to a special cake-cutting ceremony, followed by a delicious lunch, the hospitality left a lasting impression on the young guests.
