The students of Luing Senior Secondary School, East Sikkim, were given a unique opportunity to visit the Sikkim Legislative Assembly on July 8, 2025. This visit was part of an educational field trip organised especially for Class XII students from the Humanities and Tourism streams.
The visit was aimed at providing the students with firsthand exposure to the democratic processes and institutional functioning of the state's legislature. Accompanied by their teachers, the group was warmly welcomed by officials of the Assembly Secretariat, who took time out of their schedule to explain the inner workings of the legislative body.
During the tour, the students were guided through different sections of the Legislative Assembly complex. The officers of the Secretariat interacted with the students and gave a simple but informative overview of how Assembly sessions are conducted, how laws are made, and how elected representatives participate in discussions and debates. The officers also patiently answered questions raised by the students on various topics related to governance, decision-making, and the functioning of the legislative machinery.
One of the most engaging parts of the visit was the session conducted by the IT Section of the Assembly Secretariat. The students were introduced to the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), a digital initiative under the Government of India that aims to make legislative proceedings entirely paperless. The IT officers explained how the NeVA platform is being used by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly to modernize its operations, reduce paper usage, and increase transparency. The students were informed that through NeVA, members of the Assembly now access documents, reports, and session agendas digitally. Furthermore, the platform is also open to the public, allowing citizens to follow legislative proceedings in real time.
