The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Soreng and Gyalshing, has launched a seven-day residential training program to enhance disaster response capabilities among 352 Disaster Management officials from the two districts.

The training, held at the Mountaineering and Adventure Institute of Sikkim (MAIS), Yuksum, is being conducted in batches of fifty, with the first batch commencing on February 23, 2025. The program includes two days of theoretical training by experts from SSDMA and DDMA, covering risk assessment, response strategies, coordination mechanisms, and psychosocial care, followed by three days of hands-on search and rescue training.

The practical training, conducted near a river, focuses on rescue techniques such as river crossing, ropework, and evacuation procedures, crucial for disaster response in Sikkim’s challenging terrain. The initiative aims to equip officials with first-responder skills to ensure quick and effective community-level disaster response.

With 1,145 Disaster Management officials appointed across all six districts, similar training programs for the remaining four districts will commence soon.
