SSB’s 72nd Battalion leads green initiative at Cherzing Monastery in Pelling

The 72nd Battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Yuksam, conducted a large-scale tree plantation drive on June 15 in the serene premises of Cherzing Monastery (Skywalk), Pelling, West Sikkim. Organized under the national banner of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”, the event was held under the visionary leadership of the Commandant of the 72nd Battalion.

The plantation drive aimed not only to enhance green cover but also to foster environmental awareness among local communities and visiting tourists. The event brought together a diverse group of participants, reflecting a strong community spirit in the effort toward a cleaner and greener future.

Adding a meaningful touch to the program, members of Sandiksha, along with its Chairperson, joined in planting saplings, showcasing a model of civic participation and emotional investment in environmental causes.

Key dignitaries who attended the event included the Administrator of Cherzing Monastery, the General Manager of BSNL (Sikkim), Buddhist monks, monastery trainees, local citizens, and tourists. Their presence turned the plantation program into a people-centric and culturally inclusive movement. The participation of the Second-in-Command Officer of the 36th Battalion further emphasized inter-unit cooperation and solidarity.

The 72nd Battalion of SSB has consistently demonstrated its commitment beyond border security—actively engaging in cleanliness drives, public health campaigns, and environmental initiatives across the region.
