Personnel of the Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB) at BOP Phalut successfully saved the life of an 11-year-old tourist who fell unconscious due to high-altitude conditions. The child, Sakhya Das, was part of a group of six tourists from South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, who had traveled to Phalut via Sandakphu.
Upon reaching BOP Phalut, the young tourist lost consciousness, likely due to altitude sickness and extreme weather. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Post Commander SI Harikesh Kumar immediately informed Company Commander Shibu Mandal, AC, who was stationed at the post for a night halt. Without delay, the SSB team administered oxygen and provided emergency medical aid. After an hour of treatment, the child regained consciousness and stabilized.
Raju Bista, Member of Parliament from Darjeeling and BJP’s National Spokesperson, extended his heartfelt gratitude to the SSB personnel for their timely intervention. He praised their commitment to ensuring the safety of visitors in the challenging terrain of the Singalila range. “I am immensely grateful to our dedicated SSB jawans for their professional response in saving the child’s life. Their efforts have brought relief to the family and the entire tourist group,” Bista stated.
Sakhya’s parents and the rest of the group expressed deep appreciation for the life-saving assistance. After receiving medical care, the group resumed their journey to Gorkhey, accompanied by their guide, Shankhlal Tamang.
The Singalila range, which houses the BOP Phalut post, is a crucial region connecting West Bengal and Sikkim. Due to its high-altitude terrain and unpredictable weather, tourists often face health challenges, making the presence of SSB personnel vital for ensuring safety. This incident highlights the critical role played by security forces in safeguarding not only the borders but also the lives of those venturing into the Himalayan region.
