The women’s wing of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party has warmly welcomed the state government’s decision to observe August 10 every year as ‘Aama Samman Diwas’ (Mother’s Day). The announcement, made by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, was described as a meaningful step to honor the contributions and sacrifices of mothers across Sikkim.
At a press conference held today at the SKM party headquarters, senior women leaders expressed their gratitude to the Chief Minister for the decision. The event was attended by District Vice President and Women’s Wing In-charge Chirimpalu Pradhan, State Women’s Wing In-charge Kavita Sapkota, Women’s Wing Convenor Dina Chettri, District In-charge Prabha Bhandari, Vice Presidents Sarala and Anita Pradhan, and Gangtok District In-charge Sharmila Chettri.
Speaking at the gathering, party leaders said the declaration of ‘Aama Samman Diwas’ was not just a symbolic gesture but a strong and positive recognition of the role mothers play in families, communities, and the nation. They noted that the idea of dedicating a day to mothers had earlier been suggested by the SKM Party President, and they were glad to see the government put it into action.
“This decision reflects a government that listens to its people and values grassroots contributions,” one of the speakers said. “Mothers work tirelessly, often without recognition, and this initiative sends a clear message of respect and gratitude.”
The women’s wing also addressed potential criticism, stating that they preferred to focus on the positive impact of the decision rather than engage with negative remarks. “It is rare for a government to officially dedicate a day to honor mothers. Sikkim has taken the lead, and we are proud of it,” they said.
Leaders recalled that the SKM government has in the past organized various programs for women, including self-help group (SHG) activities in places like Jorethang. However, they said that dedicating an official day for mothers was a step beyond routine welfare programs, as it recognized women’s contributions in both personal and public life.
They described the move as “visionary” and “heartfelt,” adding that it would inspire greater respect for women in both rural and urban areas. “A token of love is often just words. But here, the words have been turned into meaningful action that will be remembered for years,” one leader noted.
The women’s wing leaders reaffirmed their support for the Chief Minister and the government’s policies that promote dignity, equality, and respect for women. “We see our Chief Minister not only as a political leader but as someone who understands and values women’s contributions deeply,” they said. “We will always support initiatives that recognize the role of women in society.”
