The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has announced that this year’s “Jan Unmukti Diwas” (People’s Liberation Day), to be celebrated on August 10, will be observed in a grander and more meaningful manner. In a heartfelt move, the party has also decided to mark the day as “Ama Samman Diwas” (Mother’s Honour Day), dedicated to recognising and honouring the mothers of Sikkim.

The announcement was made today by SKM Secretary General Arun Upreti during the first preparatory meeting held at the Rangpo Tourist Guest House. The meeting was chaired by Executive President Kunga Nima Lepcha, and was attended by a wide range of party leaders including Chief Coordinator Ven. Sonam Lama, ministers, MLAs, party spokespersons, advisors, and other senior officials.

As per the directive of Party President and Chief Minister Mr. Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), the occasion is being expanded this year to honour mothers who have contributed silently and selflessly to society. Speaking at the meeting, Upreti said, “The Chief Minister has envisioned this year’s celebration to be more inclusive and respectful by recognising the important role of mothers through Ama Samman Diwas.”

On this special occasion, the government will distribute cheques under the newly launched “Sikkim Ama Empowerment Scheme”, which aims to provide financial support to mothers. In addition, LPG gas cylinders will be handed out to mothers under the “Ama Sahayog Yojana”, a welfare initiative designed to offer practical assistance to women, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.

The SKM clarified that special attention will be given to mothers who have already benefitted from earlier women-centric schemes of the party. These mothers will be further supported through concessions, services, and recognitions as a gesture of appreciation for their role in building the state’s social fabric.
