The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has strongly criticised the joint protest staged in Gangtok by the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC), terming it a “desperate drama” aimed at staying politically relevant.
During the protest, SDF and SPCC leaders shouted slogans of “Vote Thief, Quit Power” in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The SKM has said that this move has clearly exposed SDF’s “proved alliance” with Congress, despite the party’s repeated denials in the past.
In a statement issued by SKM Spokesperson Bikash Basnet, the party said that the protest lacked credibility and was only a political stunt. “If SDF and SPCC were serious, they should have raised the matter during counting, not after one and a half years. Their sudden noise only proves their opportunism,” the statement read.
The SKM further pointed out that the Election Commission of India had already dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of “vote theft” as baseless, clarifying that no manipulation was possible in the manner alleged.
Drawing a sharp contrast, the ruling party highlighted the achievements of the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing major schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ayushman Bharat, and Digital India, which have brought transformative changes across India. The party said that Sikkim has benefitted greatly from this support and is being developed as a “model of sustainable growth.”
As an NDA partner, the SKM said it was grateful to Prime Minister Modi for his vision and care towards Sikkim and the Sikkimese people. The party added that the 2024 Assembly Elections gave SKM a historic mandate, reaffirming the people’s trust in the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay).
“The failed opposition cannot challenge us on the grounds of development and governance, so they now cling to baseless and laughable protests. In democracy, it is people’s mandate that counts, not the nuisance of frustrated opposition forces,” Basnet said.
The SKM has urged the people of Sikkim to remain vigilant against what it called “misleading tactics of failed opposition forces” and to continue supporting the path of stability, progress, and inclusive growth under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
