The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party held a press conference in Gangtok today, where party leaders came together to address the recent political developments and rising public questions around law and order. Present at the press meet were senior SKM leaders Bikash Basnett, Jacob Khaling, and Sahdev Sharma.

In a joint statement, the leaders expressed deep concern over what they called “false propaganda” being spread by the opposition. They also defended the actions of the government and the police while calling for peace and unity among the people of Sikkim.

SKM leaders defended their Youth Wing President Lakpa Mukhtan, who has recently been accused of involvement in a political incident. General Secretary Jacob Khaling said, “There is a deliberate attempt to target Lakpa Mukhtan. If anyone has any evidence, let them come forward. Otherwise, stop playing political games. The government will not spare anyone who takes the law into their own hands, no matter who they are.”

He added that the incident is being used by some political elements to gain personal mileage and that the opposition has started a campaign of character assassination. “We believe in truth and transparency. The police have already held a press conference and said that a proper investigation is being conducted. The matter is being handled as per the law,” Khaling said.

The SKM leaders said that the opposition must show maturity and stop misleading the people. “The opposition leader should apologize publicly for his statements and false accusations. This kind of behavior is against the spirit of democracy,” said Sahdev Sharma.

He further warned people not to fall for political rumors or tricks. “Some people are trying to provoke chaos in Sikkim. This must be condemned. We have always believed in peaceful progress,” he added.

The leaders also reminded the public of SKM’s roots. “We are the sons and daughters of Sikkim. Our party came from a peaceful revolution. We ended a 25-year dictatorship and brought democracy to the people,” said Bikash Basnett.

He stressed that SKM has never been involved in violence, even when it was in the opposition. “We fought for change with only one shirt, one pant, and one pair of shoes. Today, those who lost power are calling us goons. This is dirty politics, and we reject it.”

When asked about the recent increase in violence in the state and the fact that no arrests have been made yet, Jacob Khaling responded firmly. “Law and order are under control. The police are working, and investigations are ongoing. We don’t believe in rushing justice. Everything will be done as per the law,” he said.

He urged the people to stay calm and let the law take its own course. “Don’t believe everything you hear. Our government believes in peace and justice. Anyone found guilty will be punished,” he assured.

SKM leaders also addressed questions regarding re-employment of retired officials. “When we came to power, we stopped unnecessary extensions. That used to block promotions for younger officers. But in some cases, based on expertise and requirement, we have given re-employment, not extension,” explained Sahdev Sharma.

He added, “We need qualified people in technical and administrative posts. Police cannot do engineering work. That is why we appointed a retired engineer as Divisional Engineer. It was done legally, not politically. It was done in public interest.”

The leaders condemned the opposition’s new trend of targeting bureaucrats and professionals. “This has never happened before in Sikkim. Bureaucrats are being dragged into politics. This is wrong and dangerous,” said Bikash Basnett.

The SKM leaders appealed to the people of Sikkim to stay united and support peace and development. “We have always worked for the betterment of Sikkim. Our government is honest and transparent. Don’t let political rumors divide us,” said Jacob Khaling.
