In Sikkim’s Pakyong District, a six-year-old girl shared a troubling story with her teacher, leading to a police investigation into a serious crime. On May 7, 2025, the headmaster of a local school in Rongli filed a formal complaint.

The complaint, backed by a school official, described a situation involving a young girl, just six years and three months old, who joined the school in February 2025. Her mother left the family to start a new life with another person, leaving the girl’s father, a daily wage worker, struggling to care for her. To give his daughter a chance at a better education, he entrusted her to a relative’s care in Rongli.

On the morning of May 7, around 10 a.m., the girl opened up to her class teacher, Mrs. D., about a secret. She said her 14-year-old cousin, who lived in the same house had harmed her in a bedroom. The teacher, alarmed by the child’s words, quickly informed the headmaster. The headmaster wrote a detailed report and sent it to the Rongli Police Station. The report, also signed by a school official, called for urgent legal action to protect the young girl.

On the same day, they registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, a law designed to safeguard children from abuse. The case, listed as FIR No. 02/2025, cites sections 5(l)(m)(n) and 6 of the POCSO Act, which deal with serious offenses like aggravated penetrative sexual assault, especially when the victim is very young or related to the accused. Because the accused is a 14-year-old boy, the case involves a juvenile, meaning he is being treated under special laws for young offenders.

The investigation began immediately, with a Juvenile Police Officer taking charge. Both the young girl and the 14-year-old boy were taken to Rongli Primary Health Centre for medical examinations to gather evidence. The police also spoke with the girl, the boy and others who might know something about what happened. Their statements were carefully recorded under Section 180 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023. The investigation is still ongoing.
