Jacob Khaling, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister of Sikkim, engaged with the Police Commissioner of Siliguri to address pressing concerns impacting Sikkim and the hill regions. The discussion focused on the recent extortion incident at NJP, Siliguri, involving a driver ("chalak") from Sikkim, which has raised widespread alarm.
Khaling presented substantial evidence, including newspaper clippings, social media posts, video footage, and a formal complaint, to underscore the gravity of the issue. He expressed the grievances of Sikkimese residents and stressed the need for immediate intervention.
"The extortion incident has caused significant distress among people from Sikkim and other hill regions. It was reassuring to see the Police Commissioner give undivided attention to our concerns," Khaling said.
The Police Commissioner assured that an in-depth investigation, led by a senior officer of DySP rank, has already been initiated. He emphasized that justice for the victim is a priority and vowed to uphold the safety and security of individuals from Sikkim and neighboring hill areas.
During the meeting, Khaling also raised the issue of targeted inspections of vehicles with SK registration plates and others from the hill regions. The Police Commissioner responded positively, promising to issue immediate directives to concerned authorities to address the matter.
