Sikkim's 10-year-old Shankalp Gupta from Lal Bazaar, Gangtok, secures a spot among the Top 12 contestants in the upcoming season of Super Dancer Chapter 5 on Sony TV. This young boy, with his unstoppable energy and love for dance, has not only brought honour to his family but has also put Sikkim’s talent on the national map.

Shankalp, a student of Ambitabh School, was born on September 14, 2013. Like many children, he was cheerful and curious, but it was his deep interest in dance that set him apart. His journey began at Music in Motion Dance Academy, located at MG Marg, New Market, Gangtok. Under the guidance of his dedicated dance teacher, Pravesh Tamang, Shankalp trained rigorously in Western dance styles. The academy, which also runs a branch in Siliguri, has played a key role in shaping his skills and confidence.

Speaking at a press conference held in Gangtok, Dance Director Pravesh Tamang shared the emotional and inspiring journey of Shankalp and his team. “This is a very big achievement for our son of Sikkim. He has reached the Top 12 in Super Dancer Chapter 5. Two episodes featuring him have already been filmed and the show will begin airing from July,” he said.

Shankalp's selection is a continuation of a proud tradition — Sikkimese artists have been part of Super Dancer since Season 1. Their consistent presence has inspired young talents across the state to dream big and showcase their skills on bigger platforms.

For Pravesh Tamang, this achievement holds deep personal meaning. Despite facing hardships, including his wife's ongoing dialysis treatment at Manipal Hospital, he continued supporting his students, travelling between Namchi, Gangtok, and Siliguri, ensuring his students didn’t miss a beat. “Even when my wife was admitted for dialysis, I coordinated with the show’s team. They understood our situation and gave us support. My students never stopped practicing,” he shared.

Shankalp’s parents, Sita Ram Gupta and Seema Gupta, have also been pillars of strength. They stood by their child through every step, even travelling to Mumbai as part of his Super Dancer journey. Their constant encouragement has kept Shankalp motivated, even during long hours of training — sometimes up to 16 hours a day.

“I first noticed her potential when she joined Amitaba School. One of the dance teachers saw something special in her and encouraged more focused training,” said Pravesh, speaking about how raw talent was refined through training and commitment.

Currently, three students from the academy are preparing for upcoming reality shows, all filled with the same passion and hunger to perform. “We believe every child has the potential to shine. This is not just one child’s journey, it is the journey of many. We support them from behind the scenes and push them forward,” said Pravesh.
