In a world where many turn a blind eye to the plight of abandoned animals, Kritima Gurung stands as a symbol of hope. A resident of Tibet Road, Gangtok and a government employee, Kritima’s journey into animal rescue started not from a career choice, but from a life-changing experience that reshaped her view of the world.

In 2019, Kritima was struck by the devastating impact of COVID-19, contracting the virus twice. The second time, her condition grew critical leaving her fighting for life on a ventilator. After her recovery, she was diagnosed with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to which doctors said was incurable. During her long, painful recovery, Kritima’s perception of life transformed. No longer taking her health for granted, she began to see the value in every living being, especially those in need.

Two key incidents instilled in her deep commitment to animal welfare. The first occurred when she came across a sick dog near a hospital. Helpless and unsure of what to do, Kritima took the dog to SARAH, a local NGO dedicated to animal rescue. She witnessed firsthand the selfless efforts of those who cared for animals without expecting anything in return, which left a deep impact on her.

The second incident involved a paralyzed puppy named Sweetie, rescued by SART, another local organization. Despite her own ongoing treatment, Kritima felt an instant connection to Sweetie and vowed to do everything in her power to help the puppy. After persistent efforts, a shelter in Kalimpong agreed to take the puppy in, but sadly, Sweetie passed away shortly thereafter. "Sweetie was the one who inspired me to help animals more...she will always stay in my heart," Kritima recalls, tears welling up in her eyes.

Now, Kritima works independently, dedicating her time and resources to rescuing and fostering stray animals. She provides them with a safe and loving environment until she can find them a forever home. Though she acknowledges that she cannot save every animal, Kritima’s mission is clear: "I know it is not possible to save everyone, but I want to save as many lives as I can because when I do, I feel I have truly reached heaven."

Through her tireless work, Kritima has become an inspiration to many in the community. Her compassion and dedication to the welfare of animals, particularly dogs and cats, has made a lasting impact. As she continues her battle with illness, Kritima remains undeterred in her quest to give homeless, sick, and abandoned animals the comfortable lives they deserve. "Although their life may have been full of struggle and hardships, I want to at least give them a cozy and comfortable place at the end of their lives," she says.

Kritima’s vision doesn’t stop there. She dreams of providing jackets for all the needy animals, ensuring they stay warm in the winter and removing them when summer approaches. She urges everyone to have the courage to be kind and to always choose compassion for the creatures who cannot speak for themselves.
