Sikkim’s representative at Miss Universe India 2025, Jackielyn Pradhan, has found herself at the centre of a cultural controversy after her appearance in the National Costume Round of the pageant. While her outfit drew attention on stage, it has sparked strong objections from the Sukhim Yakthung Sapsok Songchumbho (SYSS), a community organisation representing the Limboo community in Sikkim.
The controversy stems from the use of an ornament resembling Samyangphung, a sacred cultural symbol of the Limboo people, in Pradhan’s costume. Traditionally, the Samyangphung is worn with great reverence on the head by Limbooni women during cultural and religious occasions. However, in Pradhan’s outfit, the ornament was placed below the waist in the front, a design choice that SYSS has described as “deeply objectionable” and “culturally insensitive.”
In a statement, SYSS condemned the presentation, saying, “Samyangphung is not a mere ornament—it is a sacred cultural symbol. Its placement inappropriately below the waist is hurtful to the sentiments of the Limboo community.”
The organisation has demanded a public clarification from both Jackielyn Pradhan and her designer regarding the decision to incorporate the sacred symbol in this manner. “On behalf of all Sikkimese Limboos, we strongly condemn this act,” SYSS stated, adding that cultural traditions should be respected, especially on national platforms that showcase India’s diversity to the world.
The issue has stirred debate across Sikkim, with many urging sensitivity when blending cultural heritage into fashion or beauty contests. Supporters of the Limboo community argue that national stages such as Miss Universe India should highlight tradition with dignity, rather than risk misrepresentation.
At the same time, some voices on social media have called for dialogue instead of outrage, suggesting that the controversy could be an opportunity to educate wider audiences about the cultural significance of symbols like the Samyangphung.
As of now, Jackielyn Pradhan and her design team have not issued a response. The organisers of Miss Universe India have also not commented on the matter.
