As Sikkim marked the historic occasion of its 50th Statehood Day, Governor Om Prakash Mathur described the golden jubilee as a celebration of "peace, progress and patriotism", acknowledging the state's transformation from a once-isolated kingdom into one of the most progressive and peaceful states in the country.

Governor Mathur paid glowing tributes to the courage and aspirations of the people of Sikkim who, five decades ago, chose to merge with the Indian Union through a democratic process. “On this momentous day, we honour the legacy of those who envisioned a future rooted in unity, democracy and national integration. Sikkim’s journey since 1975 has been a testament to peace, inclusive development, and unwavering patriotism,” he said.

The event, held with full ceremonial grandeur, was attended by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, cabinet ministers, MLAs, senior bureaucrats and distinguished guests.

Speaking on Sikkim's journey over the past 50 years, the Governor said, “When Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975, it embraced not only the Constitution of India but also the spirit of democratic governance. Since then, it has emerged as a shining example of balanced development, harmony, and progress.”

Governor Mathur noted Sikkim’s significant achievements in organic farming, environmental sustainability, literacy, women empowerment, and inclusive governance. He commended the leadership and people of Sikkim for preserving the state’s unique identity while becoming a model in sectors like education, tourism, and healthcare.

“Sikkim has demonstrated how democratic aspirations, when rooted in strong cultural values and collective will, can uplift an entire society. Its emphasis on ecology, equitable growth, and innovation continues to inspire the rest of the country,” he added.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, in his address, highlighted the unity and maturity shown by the people of Sikkim during the critical period leading to the historic merger with India. “The Golden Jubilee is not just a celebration of political integration; it is a celebration of the people’s dreams, sacrifices, and the determination to build a better future,” he said.

The day also saw performances by local artists showcasing the rich cultural diversity of Sikkim, alongside the felicitation of individuals and institutions that have contributed to the state's development.

Governor Mathur, while addressing the youth, urged them to remain rooted in their values and to carry forward the legacy of those who fought for a democratic and inclusive Sikkim. “As we commemorate this golden jubilee, let us pledge to uphold the principles of our Constitution and work together for a future defined by peace, prosperity and patriotism,” he said.
