Sikkim Women’s Commission conducts health camp for women inmates at Rongyek Jail

The Sikkim State Commission for Women, in collaboration with the National Commission for Women, organized a health camp for women inmates and prison personnel on February 13, 2025, at Sikkim State Jail, Rongyek. The camp was conducted under the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) programme with doctors and support staff from the Rongyek Urban Health and Wellness Centre providing medical assistance.

Tan Doma Bhutia, Chairperson of the Sikkim State Commission for Women, attended the event along with commission members Rupa Mangar, Subarna Pradhan, and the Member Secretary. Sabitri Pradhan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Prison), was also present along with other prison personnel.

During the event, Tan Doma Bhutia highlighted that the commission has been conducting various programmes under the National Commission for Women, including health camps for inmates. She further explained that under the Sikkim State Commission for Women Act, 2001, the commission is required to inspect prisons regularly to assess the conditions of women inmates and provide vocational training when needed.

Sabitri Pradhan expressed her gratitude to the Women’s Commission for organizing the camp and expressed a desire to collaborate on more such programmes in the future.

Ten Tshering Lepcha, along with prison officers and officials, also attended the camp, which aimed to enhance healthcare services and promote the well-being of women inmates.
