Sikkim: Watershed yatra campaign promotes water conservation in Mangan district

The Watershed Yatra campaign, under the Water Development Component of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (WDC-PMKSY) 2.0, was successfully organized at Mangshila Gram Panchayat Kendra (GPK) in Mangan District. The event, led by the Project Implementing Agency under the State-Level Nodal Agency of the Forest & Environment Department, Sikkim, aimed to raise awareness about water conservation and sustainable agricultural practices.
The programme was graced by Kado Tshering Lepcha, Adhakshya (North), as the Chief Guest. Other notable attendees included Pempa Dadul Lachenpa (District Forest Officer), Santa Subba (ACF), Santosh Bagdas (ACF), Norden Tshering Bhutia (RO), Wangyal Tshering Bhutia (AD-PRI), along with Zilla Panchayat members, Watershed Committee members and staff from the Forest Department.
The event commenced with a Swearing Ceremony, Bhumi Pooja (Rabney), and a rally from the roadside to the GPK, emphasizing the significance of water conservation. A cultural programme followed, showcasing local traditions and community spirit. A skit performed by the Social Forestry staff from Mangan highlighted sustainable farming techniques and their role in environmental preservation.
Progressive farmers from various Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs) in Mangan District were recognized for their contributions to sustainable agriculture. The awardees included:
- Sangdup Lepcha (Ringhim-Nampatang)
- Dup Tshering Lepcha (Manul)
- Pem Lhakit Lepcha (Singhik-Sentam)
- Mohan Prasad Limboo (Mangshilla-Tibuk)
A video showcasing their innovative farming techniques was presented, demonstrating their dedication to sustainable farming and water management. Additionally, Mr. Jigmee Hissey Bhutia delivered an insightful presentation on progressive farming, emphasizing the importance of maintaining detailed farming records for transparency and effective assessment of government schemes.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Kado Tshering Lepcha highlighted the crucial role of water conservation and urged public participation in training programmes offered by the department. He stressed that safeguarding water resources is a shared responsibility and congratulated the awardees for their commitment to sustainable farming.
Adding a national perspective to the event, Tridav Nath and Naba Jyoti Nath from Assam, who are traveling across India with a Watershed truck, participated in the programme. Representing the Government of India, their journey aims to spread awareness about water conservation and sustainable practices, aligning with the objectives of WDC-PMKSY 2.0.
