Sikkim: Uncle arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting niece in Uttarey

A 60-year-old man was arrested in Uttarey who was accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting his 15-year-old niece. The details came to light after the young girl sought medical help for severe abdominal pain and a pregnancy test revealed she was expecting. She has since given birth to a baby girl.

The incident came to light on the evening of April 8 around 8:30 PM. The minor, a resident of Uttaray, was taken by her mother to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Dentam due to complaints of intense pain in her abdomen. Medical professionals at the PHC conducted a urine pregnancy test, which came back positive. Concerned by the young girl's condition and the unexpected pregnancy, the medical officer at Dentam PHC informed the local police station.

Upon further inquiry by the police, the incident came to light. The young girl disclosed that she had been repeatedly sexually assaulted, with penetration, by her own uncle, identified as Ganey Lall Limboo, son of the late San Bdr Limboo. The alleged abuse is said to have occurred multiple times over an unspecified period.

The 15-year-old even gave birth to a baby girl while still at the Dentam PHC.

Uttaray Police Station took action and registered a First Information Report (FIR No: 04.2025) on April 9. The case has been registered under serious sections of the law, including Section 63 and 65 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 5(j)(ii) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

During the course of their initial investigation, the police successfully apprehended the accused, Ganey Lall Limboo, from his place of origin, Barbotey, near Uttarey. He is now in police custody.

The police also conducted a preliminary medical examination of the young victim to gather crucial evidence. Following this, the minor girl has been forwarded to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
