A group of ten tourists, all students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad, suffered injuries when their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged nearly 100 feet down a steep hillside in North Sikkim. The accident occurred near Pakshep, Forest Dara, in Mangan district on the night of March 15 at around 9:30 PM.
The ill-fated vehicle, a Mahindra Maxx, was carrying six male and four female students when it lost control while traveling from Lachung to Gangtok. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined, but initial reports suggest poor road conditions and possible driver fatigue may have played a role.
Local residents and rescue teams rushed to the scene to assist the injured passengers. Three of them, who sustained critical injuries, were immediately transported to a hospital in Gangtok for advanced medical care. The remaining victims received treatment at a nearby health center in Mangan.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. The condition of the injured tourists is being closely monitored, and further updates are expected from the medical teams overseeing their recovery.
This incident has once again highlighted the challenges of navigating the treacherous mountainous roads of Sikkim, especially during night travel. Officials have urged travelers to exercise caution and adhere to safety protocols to prevent such mishaps in the future.
