Sikkim’s prominent tribal leader Tseten Tashi Bhutia made a powerful appeal on Tuesday, urging the Indian judiciary to uphold its sacred duty of delivering justice without fear or favour. Speaking under the banner of “An Appeal for Justice — For Those Who Stand Alone,” Bhutia expressed deep concern about the state of justice for those who lack money, political influence, or powerful connections.
Addressing the people and the judiciary through a public statement, Bhutia said that in a democracy like India, the judiciary is often the last hope for many innocent and helpless citizens. “When this sacred pillar is shaken by undue pressures — whether political, monetary, or personal — the weak and voiceless are left with nowhere to turn,” he said.
Bhutia's message, written in plain and emotional language, called upon the Honourable Judges and officers of the court to protect the integrity of the judicial system. He reminded them of the immense trust that the people of India place in their hands and urged them to base every verdict on truth, merit, and the Constitution, not on fear or favour.
In his statement, Bhutia cited examples of legendary Indian judges who stood tall in difficult times. He recalled how Justice H.R. Khanna defended the right to life and liberty during the Emergency, Justice P.N. Bhagwati opened the courts to the poor through Public Interest Litigation (PIL), and Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer brought compassion into the courtroom. He also mentioned Justice J.S. Verma who protected women’s rights even before laws were in place, Justice Kuldip Singh who was known as the ‘Green Judge’ for his environmental rulings, and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud who is known for upholding civil liberties and equality.
“These noble judges remind us that a single fair judgment can restore faith in the entire system, while a single wrong one can destroy countless lives and generations,” Bhutia said.
The tribal leader also addressed fellow citizens of the country. He encouraged people to remain vigilant, raise their voices peacefully, and always stand by the truth. According to him, a watchful and responsible society can inspire the courts to remain strong and independent.
