The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH & VS) Department has successfully concluded a 16-day intensive training programme for the fourth batch of Pashusakhis, aimed at strengthening livestock healthcare and management in Sikkim. The initiative, conducted in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), is part of a larger effort to create a network of certified Accredited Agents for Health and Extension of Livestock Production (A-HELPs) to support the state's farming communities.

A total of 24 Pashusakhis from the Sikkim Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) completed the training at the Sokeythang Training Centre in Tadong, Gangtok. The curriculum featured both theoretical sessions and hands-on training in critical areas such as advanced animal handling techniques, modern housing practices, ration balancing, first aid for livestock, and sustainable livestock management. Participants were also educated about various central and state government schemes related to the Animal Husbandry sector.

To enhance practical knowledge, the trainees participated in field visits to key veterinary and dairy facilities across Sikkim, including:

State Veterinary Polyclinic

State Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab

Mobile Veterinary Unit Call Centre (1962)

Mamring Gaushala

Singhari Goat Conservation Farm

Sikkim Milk Union

Assam Linzey MPCS

Aho Veterinary Dispensary

Progressive farmers' farms

The programme, which ran from February 17 to March 4, 2025, concluded with a valedictory ceremony on March 5, 2025. The event was attended by key officials, including Dr. Anand Thapa, Principal Director (VS), Directors, Additional Directors, Joint Directors, Veterinary Officers, as well as representatives from SISCO Bank and United Insurance Company, who contributed as resource persons during the training.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Anand Thapa spoke on the importance of the initiative in bridging the gap between veterinary services and livestock farmers. "By empowering Pashusakhis with comprehensive training, we are creating a sustainable model for livestock healthcare and management across Sikkim," he said.
