The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) continues to transform rural Sikkim by enhancing connectivity to remote villages, many of which are located in challenging terrains. The upcoming PMGSY-IV, launched in 2024, aims to construct 62,500 km of all-weather roads across rural India, including the North East and hill states, with a focus on linking 25,000 unconnected habitations.

In response to questions raised by Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, the Ministry of Rural Development informed Parliament that Sikkim has been sanctioned 5,220 km of road length under PMGSY. Of this, 4,730 km has already been constructed. Survey work is currently underway to identify additional unconnected habitations as per population norms, with implementation set from 2024 to 2029, according to Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan.

MP Indra Hang Subba highlighted the transformative impact of PMGSY on rural Sikkim, emphasizing how improved road networks have facilitated access to healthcare, education, markets, and government services. He also shared how his own home village of Hee Gaon in West Sikkim was connected to the state’s mainstream through PMGSY, reducing rural isolation.

“PMGSY has empowered rural Sikkim and played a vital role in promoting inclusive development as envisioned by Late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji,” said Subba.
