Sikkim tea planters visit Ilam in Nepal to gain insights into tea cultivation

Members of the Tea Growers Welfare Board from Gnathang-Machong in Pakyong district undertook an exposure visit to Ilam, Nepal, on February 19–20, accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP D.T. Lepcha. The visit aimed to gain in-depth knowledge about tea cultivation and factory setup, leveraging Ilam’s similar altitude and climate to enhance Sikkim’s tea-growing practices.
The board, which has already established 35 acres of tea plantations in 2024, emphasized that the trip provided invaluable insights into advanced cultivation and processing techniques. “This learning experience will help us enhance tea production and processing in our region,” the board stated.
The members expressed their heartfelt gratitude to MP D.T. Lepcha for his vision, guidance, and unwavering support in promoting tea cultivation and facilitating the visit. “His leadership has encouraged us to adopt best practices from Ilam and improve tea production,” they added.
The board also highlighted the long-term impact of the visit. “The knowledge gained will play a vital role in the development of tea farming and agro-tourism in Gnathang-Machong, contributing to local economic growth,” they noted.
