The Sikkim Board of Indigenous Languages (SBIL), a directorate under the Education Department of the Government of Sikkim, successfully organized the annual written examination for classes IX, X, XI, and XII in seven indigenous languages. The initiative, part of the state’s Distance Mode of Education program launched in 2020 aims to preserve and promote the rich linguistic heritage of Sikkim.
This year, 342 candidates appeared for the examination across the seven languages: Rai, Tamang, Gurung, Mangar, Sherpa, Newar, and Mukhiya. The distribution of candidates was as follows:
• Rai: 152 candidates
• Tamang: 38 candidates
• Sherpa: 40 candidates
• Gurung: 30 candidates
• Mangar: 39 candidates
• Newar: 34 candidates
• Mukhiya: 9 candidates
Deputy Director of SBIL, Mrs. Sudha Rai, highlighted the increasing interest among students in these examinations. “The growing enthusiasm among young learners to study and be certified in their native languages is a significant step toward preserving our cultural identity,” she said.
The examination, valued at 100 marks, is divided into three components: an 80-mark written test, a 10-mark direct interview, and a 10-mark assignment. Students are required to secure certification from a registered institution of their respective language and submit their forms at the directorate to be eligible.
The certification and marksheets awarded upon passing are recognized globally. Furthermore, they open up opportunities for candidates to secure government jobs, enhancing the practical value of indigenous language studies.
The exams were conducted under the guidance of Doma Zimba, Joint Director of the Directorate and Harimaya Pradhan, Deputy Director of the Language Faculty of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. Textbook officers and additional textbook officers from each language closely monitored the examination process to ensure its smooth execution.
