Sikkim: Sports campaign promotes women’s empowerment at Pabyuik Senior Secondary School

The Women and Child Development Department, Gangtok District, organized a one-day sports campaign at Pabyuik Senior Secondary School, emphasizing women’s empowerment and gender equality. The event was led by Manikala Gurung, Social Welfare Officer (SWO) of Gangtok District, along with a team of Gender Specialists from the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW).
The campaign began with an exciting 100-meter race for girls, followed by a 4×100 meter baton relay for women, symbolizing the goals of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative. A Women’s Doubles Badminton Championship match also energized the event.
Deep Ratna Gurung, Physical Education Teacher and Nedup Tshering Bhutia, Physical Instructor, coordinated the day’s activities to ensure smooth execution. The winners and participants were awarded BBBP medals and gifts, marking the 10th anniversary of the initiative.
Manikala Gurung conducted a special awareness session on Women’s Helpline (181) and Child Helpline (1098) numbers, highlighting the importance of these toll-free services for immediate assistance. A gender sensitization session encouraged students to understand their rights and goals, aligning them with the principles of BBBP.
