Sikkim Speaker Mingma Norbu Sherpa joins National Speakers’ Meet in New Delhi

Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Hon’ble Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, participated in the second day of the All India Speakers’ Conference held at the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat. Accompanied by senior officials, the Speaker joined deliberations on the theme “India – Mother of Democracy”, which brought together presiding officers from various state assemblies and Parliament to reflect on India’s democratic journey.

The two-day conference was organized to mark the centenary year of Vithalbhai Patel, the first elected Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925, who is widely remembered for his pioneering role in shaping India’s legislative practices.

On the final day, former Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Meira Kumar delivered the keynote address on “Vithalbhai Patel: Role in Shaping India’s Constitution and Legislative Institutions.” In her speech, she underlined Patel’s far-sighted leadership in strengthening the independence of legislative institutions during colonial times and his contribution to laying the groundwork for India’s parliamentary democracy.

The valedictory session was marked by notable addresses from Smt. Rekha Gupta, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister for Communications, and Shri Om Birla, Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, who emphasized the need for constant dialogue and cooperation between legislatures across the country.

Extending gratitude to all participants, Shri Parvesh Sahib Singh, Hon’ble Minister for Legislative Affairs, Government of Delhi, delivered the Vote of Thanks. He stressed that such conferences provide a meaningful platform to exchange ideas, revisit India’s democratic heritage, and inspire legislatures to function more effectively in the service of citizens.
