The Sikkim Sherpa Protection Board today paid heartfelt tribute to the legendary mountaineer Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on the occasion of his 111th birth anniversary. Celebrated worldwide for his courage, perseverance, and pioneering spirit, Tenzing Norgay remains an enduring source of inspiration across generations.

As one of the first two climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside Sir Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay brought immense pride to the Himalayan region and India. His contributions to mountaineering and adventure sports have elevated India’s global stature.

On this solemn occasion, the Board reiterated its longstanding demand for conferring the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, upon Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. The Board described this as a fitting tribute that would honour his unmatched achievements and bring immense pride to the entire Himalayan community.

Sonam Gyatso Sherpa, President of the Sikkim Sherpa Protection Board, said, “His legacy lives on—not just in mountaineering history but in the hearts of every Indian and mountain dweller who dares to dream beyond limits.”
