A sensitization program focused on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens Act, 2007, was recently held at Sribadam Samdong GPU under the guidance of the Women & Child Development Department, Soreng District. The event aimed to raise awareness about the rights and well-being of senior citizens.
The session, led by Eleena Gurung, began with a brief introduction by the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), Gauri Tamang, who explained the importance of the program in ensuring the protection of senior citizens. The discussion was centered on the provisions of the 2007 Act, which seeks to ensure that parents and senior citizens are well taken care of by their families and the state.
Tek Maya Sharma, the Protection Officer (PO) from the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), elaborated on the key provisions of the Act and highlighted the vital role of Childline 1098, a helpline that provides assistance to children in distress. She also encouraged participants to reach out for help in case of any grievances related to the welfare of senior citizens.
Adding to the discussion, Loshan Rai, the Social Welfare Inspector, shed light on several social welfare schemes available for senior citizens and individuals in need. He spoke about the Old Age Pension, Pension for Persons with Disabilities, and the Widow and Unmarried Women Pension, emphasizing how these initiatives support vulnerable groups in society.
As part of the program, glucometers and blood pressure monitors were distributed to several beneficiaries to improve their health monitoring. Among the recipients were Mingma Tshering Bhutia, Chinglap Bhutia, and Alena Limbo, who expressed their gratitude for the thoughtful gesture. Moreover, two social workers, Dawa Thendup Bhutia and Rinchen Doma Bhutia, received the health devices, along with the Panchayat House, ensuring these tools were available for public use.
