Sikkim: Self-defence training held at DSLM school under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative

A one-day self-defence training programme was successfully conducted today at Damber Singh Limboo Memorial (DSLM) Senior Secondary School, Darap, under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative. Organized by the Women and Child Development Department (WCDD), the event aimed to equip young girls with essential self-protection skills, boosting their confidence and safety awareness.
The session commenced with an introduction by Roma Chettri (Basnett), who highlighted the significance of the BBBP campaign in empowering girls. This was followed by a speech from Ms. Buddha Rai, Supervisor of ICDS, who stressed the importance of self-defence training for young girls, not just for physical safety but also for mental well-being.
The training was led by experienced Muay Thai and self-defence instructor Mr. Pranay Gurung. He demonstrated various practical techniques, including blocking, escaping holds, and striking vulnerable points on an attacker. Over 100 girls from classes VIII to XII, along with Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), Anganwadi Helpers (AWHs), and Social Welfare Inspectors (SWI), actively participated, showing great enthusiasm in learning self-defence tactics.
School Principal-in-Charge, Mr. Kamal Limboo, lauded the initiative, emphasizing its importance in ensuring the safety and empowerment of girls. The participants also expressed appreciation for the training, recognizing it as a crucial step toward self-reliance and confidence.
