Sikkim: Sanchaman Limboo Government College hosts five-day multilingual theatre workshop

Sanchaman Limboo Government College, Aarigaon, Gyalsing, West Sikkim, successfully hosted a five-day Multilingual Workshop on Theatre Arts and Performance: Foundations of Theatre from February 3 to February 7, 2025. The event focused on the theme “Exploring Multilingualism in Theatre - Preserving and Promoting Vernaculars Through Performance,” emphasizing the role of theatre in cultural preservation and artistic expression.
This initiative marked the first-ever collaboration between a Sikkim Government College and the National School of Drama (NSD), Sikkim Centre, opening new avenues for theatre education in the state.
The workshop was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Kishor Kumar Rai, who warmly welcomed and offered khadas to the five distinguished resource persons from NSD Sikkim Centre. The sessions aimed to equip students with fundamental theatre skills, including acting, voice modulation, movement, improvisation, and stagecraft.
The workshop featured expert-led interactive sessions in different aspects of theatre:
Movement: Irungbam Yaiphaba Meetei
Music: Uttam Gurung
Theatre Games/Acting: Chandrika Chettri
Property Making: Buddhiman Rai
Theatre Management: Chakra Bahadur Chettri
The five-day program proved to be a major milestone in theatre education for the institution. It set the foundation for future collaborations between Sanchaman Limboo Government College and NSD Sikkim, with the potential for more extensive training programs, research initiatives, and multilingual theatre festivals in the coming years.
On the final day, students showcased a performance reflecting their learnings from the workshop. Principal Dr. Kishor Kumar Rai congratulated the participants for their dedication and extended his gratitude to the NSD resource team for their guidance and support. In a significant move, the students resolved to establish a drama club at SLGC, ensuring a sustained interest in theatre.
The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Reep Pandi Lepcha, along with her dedicated team, including Viveka Gurung, Pema Choki Bhutia, Pema Loda Lepcha, Jigdol Bhutia, Diki Lhamu Lepcha, Sandeep Tamang, Bhim B. Subba, Diki Chomu Bhutia and Dr. Thupten Palzang Bhutia.
