The Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum (SPYF) has raised serious concerns over the increasing incidents of violence targeting individuals who dare to voice opposition against government policies in the state. In a press release issued on Monday, the forum condemned these attacks, which it says are threatening the very foundations of democracy.

According to SPYF, the recent surge in violent acts is deeply disturbing. “A democracy cannot thrive when physical force replaces meaningful conversation and debate,” the statement reads. Over the past month, several individuals who have spoken out against certain government decisions have faced brutal attacks, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

The forum stated that these acts of violence are not isolated incidents, but part of an ongoing pattern where dissenting voices are being suppressed. SPYF criticized the inaction of local law enforcement, accusing the police of failing to apprehend those responsible for the attacks. “The attackers continue to roam free while the victims bear the consequences,” SPYF noted, highlighting a worrying breakdown in the rule of law.

“This is not just an attack on individuals; it’s an attack on democracy itself. When the police fail to take action, they are essentially endorsing the erosion of our democratic values,” the press release states.

SPYF further called for immediate police intervention and the swift arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. The forum demanded that the state government take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of citizens who exercise their democratic rights. "If we remain silent, this violence will only escalate. We cannot afford to wait for the next victim," the statement warns.

The SPYF urged all citizens who value democracy to stand together in condemning these violent actions. “Silence will only invite more violence. Today it’s them, tomorrow it could be any of us,” the forum cautioned, calling for unity and action in defense of democratic rights.
