Sikkim Police rescue 57 tourists stranded by North Sikkim landslides

The Sikkim Police successfully evacuated 57 tourists who were stranded following a series of landslides that struck the North Sikkim Highway between Chungthang and Lachung late last night.

The sudden landslides, triggered by heavy rainfall, blocked key stretches of the highway and cut off access to higher-altitude locations. Tourists travelling through the region were left trapped amid challenging weather and difficult terrain.

Responding immediately, the Sikkim Police launched a well-coordinated rescue operation early this morning. Working closely with local authorities, disaster management teams, and emergency response units, the police ensured the safe evacuation of all affected individuals. Despite the rough conditions and risks involved in navigating the blocked roads, the teams acted swiftly and carefully to reach the stranded tourists.

The rescued group, which included women and children, was safely transported to Gangtok today. Medical teams were kept on standby during the operation, and all the rescued tourists were reported to be in good health, requiring no urgent medical attention.

Local officials praised the quick action taken by the police. "The timely response from the Sikkim Police made all the difference. Their presence on the ground, along with support from disaster management personnel, ensured that the operation went smoothly," said one official from Mangan district.

The state government has assured that restoration work is already underway to clear the landslide debris and reopen the highway for normal traffic. Meanwhile, tourists currently in Lachung and Lachen have been advised to stay in their hotels until further updates are issued. Hotel authorities have been cooperative, making sure guests have access to food, shelter, and basic services.
