Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the state’s plan for a modern aerial ropeway system in Gangtok. The meeting focused on the project's feasibility, benefits, and implementation under the Sikkim Ropeway Act, 2023.
Officials from the Urban Development Department (UDD), key stakeholders, and potential investors attended the meeting. The Chief Minister emphasized that the ropeway project is a major step toward reducing traffic congestion in Gangtok, improving urban mobility, and supporting the tourism industry.
Gangtok faces growing traffic congestion due to an increase in vehicles and limited road space. The proposed Golden Jubilee Cable Car project aims to provide a sustainable transport system that will ease pressure on the roads. It is also expected to generate employment and support local businesses.
During the meeting, the UDD team presented a detailed report, including traffic data, groundwork analysis, and the planned Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The revenue-sharing framework under the PPP model will ensure financial sustainability for the project.
The Chief Minister highlighted that, as part of Sikkim’s 50 years of Statehood celebrations, the project has been renamed the Golden Jubilee Cable Car. He stated that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to modern urban development and will establish Gangtok as a model city in the region.
