The Horticulture Department of Rhenock Block in Pakyong District successfully conducted an awareness-cum-distribution programme, aimed at equipping local farmers with essential agricultural inputs under various government schemes. The initiative focused on enhancing sustainable farming practices through the Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).
The programme provided farmers with high-quality seeds and other necessary inputs to improve productivity and efficiency. It also served as a platform to educate them on modern, sustainable agricultural techniques. Additionally, the event highlighted the success of local farmers who have adopted these inputs, showcasing a variety of high-quality vegetable produce grown through the schemes.
Addressing the gathering, the Horticulture Development Officer (HDO) of Rhenock underscored the importance of using modern farming inputs to enhance vegetable production. Farmers were encouraged to share their experiences and adopt innovative techniques for better yields and sustainability.
One of the key highlights of the event was the participation of 92-year-old progressive farmer Shri Som Bdr Majhi from Reshi, who presented his high-quality vegetable produce. His dedication and success served as an inspiration for fellow farmers to explore modern farming methods.
T Chophel Bhutia, Additional Director of Horticulture and Agriculture Department, Pakyong District, elaborated on various sustainable farming practices and introduced government initiatives such as the Mukhiya Mantri Atma Nirbar Yojana. He emphasized how this scheme rewards farmers who effectively utilize modern inputs to enhance production.
He also shed light on the importance of marketing key crops like large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, and buckwheat through Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to Sikkim IFFCO. Sikkim IFFCO, an integrated processing unit in Rangpo, specializes in the processing, packaging, and branding of organic products, ensuring better pricing and market access for local farmers.
SK Dungana, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Rhenock BAC, addressed the farmers, stressing the crucial role of agriculture in rural development. He urged them to embrace advanced farming techniques to secure a sustainable and profitable future.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Principal of Green Wood Academy, Rhenock, Abhiney Chettri, HDO Rhenock Smt Keshori Devi Sharma, and Panchayat Sabhapatis from four GP units under Rhenock Block.

The event reaffirmed the commitment of the Agriculture and Horticulture Department to empowering farmers with advanced agricultural knowledge, improved inputs, and strong market linkages. Through such initiatives, the department continues to work towards boosting productivity and improving the livelihoods of farmers in Rhenock Block.
