Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, along with his Cabinet ministers, MLAs, top officials, and dignitaries, observed Samvidhan Hatya Diwas at Manan Kendra on June 25. The program was held to remember a dark chapter in Indian history; the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 and to honour the spirit of democracy and constitutional values.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said that Samvidhan Hatya Diwas is a reminder for future generations that democracy must never be taken lightly. “Democracy is not just about elections. It needs constant care, active participation, and above all, deep respect for the Constitution,” he said.
Tamang described the Indian Constitution as more than just a legal document. “It is the soul of our democracy. It gives rights to every citizen and makes the government answerable to the people. It is what makes India a free and fair country,” he said.
The Chief Minister paid tribute to those who bravely opposed the Emergency, which was declared on June 25, 1975. Many political leaders, social activists, and ordinary citizens were jailed or faced persecution during that time. “Their courage and sacrifice gave us back our democracy. We must remember them and be thankful,” he added.
He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government for officially recognizing this day and its significance in the history of India. “On behalf of the people and the Government of Sikkim, I express my gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji. His leadership in recognising the value of this day is appreciated,” said the Chief Minister.
A large number of people, including senior officers, public representatives, and school children, attended the event at Manan Kendra. Speeches, cultural performances, and a pledge to protect constitutional values were also part of the program.
CM Tamang called upon all citizens to stay aware and united in protecting the principles of democracy. “Let us always remember that our freedom and rights are protected by the Constitution. We must respect it and uphold its spirit in our everyday lives,” he said.
