Sikkim on Sunday marked the first-ever Sarathi Samman Diwas, a new state-recognized occasion dedicated to honouring the invaluable contributions of the state's drivers and transport personnel. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang led the state in expressing gratitude to the “Sarathis” — the men and women behind the wheel who keep the lifeline of Sikkim running smoothly.

In a message issued on July 27, the Chief Minister extended his warmest greetings to all Sarathis across the state. He emphasized that the drivers of Sikkim are more than just transporters — they are vital connectors of people, goods, and services across the hills, valleys, and towns of the state. “Whether it is connecting remote villages, enabling school children to reach classrooms, or helping workers and tourists travel safely, our Sarathis are always at the forefront,” he said.

Highlighting their crucial role not only in daily life but also during times of crisis, the Chief Minister described the Sarathis as symbols of “silent strength, resilience, and duty.” He noted that their presence enhances economic activity, builds social bonds, and ensures the mobility and safety of people across Sikkim.

Recognizing the importance of their profession and the value of their service, the state government has officially declared July 27 as Sarathi Samman Diwas, which will be observed annually as a restricted holiday. The announcement marks a formal acknowledgment of the dignity of the profession and a reminder to all citizens of the tireless work done by these transport professionals.

“In countless homes, both local and among tourists, a Sarathi is not just a driver — they are a guide, a protector, and often a silent hero,” said CM Tamang. “Their dedication fuels our state’s daily rhythm, and their efforts are not just seen but deeply appreciated.”
