To enhance connectivity in the disaster-prone Dzongu region, a newly constructed extra-wide Bailey bridge at Sangklang was inaugurated today. The event was presided over by Zilla Upadhakshya Sonam Kipa Bhutia, in the presence of Col. Alok Shankar, Commanding Officer of the 72 Engineer Regiment, and Major Ram Lakhan Tewatia, Officer Commanding 107 RCC.
The project, initiated under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and the guidance of Forest and Environment Minister-cum-Dzongu Area MLA Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, was completed in record time. Construction began on December 26, 2024, and concluded on January 1, 2025, thanks to the joint efforts of Trishakti Sappers and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
The bridge, spanning 180 feet with a load capacity of 24 tonnes, will remain operational until summer, when rising water levels are expected to necessitate its dismantling. It serves as a critical link, restoring connectivity between Dzongu and Mangan, which had been severely disrupted.
During the inauguration, Bhutia commended the Trishakti Corps and BRO for overcoming the region’s challenging terrain and natural disasters. She highlighted the bridge's importance in facilitating the transport of goods, improving access to markets, and enhancing mobility for residents.
